Fire and Smoke Do's and Don'ts
When a fire happens in or around your home there are things you can do help stop damage from happening and salvage some of your contents so that they may be restored. Below are some do's and don'ts concerning post fire emergencies.
Fire Do's:
- Open windows for ventilation if weather permits. Placing fans in windows and opening doors is a good way evacuate smoke from the home.
- Cover carpeted traffic areas with old linens to prevent additional soiling.
- When soot and residue are visible on chrome trim faucets and other fixtures clean and protect by washing with detergent and applying a light coating of Vaseline or oil to prevent corrosion.
- Wipe residue from porcelain bath fixtures to prevent etching.
- Change the air filter on your furnace if it uses forced hot air.
- Blow off, brush or vacuum (with brush attachment) loose smoke particles from upholstery, draperies and carpeting.
- Empty refrigerators and freezers if electricity is shut off, and prop doors open to allow air circulation.
- Remove pets to a clean environment when heavy fire residue is present. Wash them as soon as possible to remove soil.
- Clothing and textiles will have to be specialty cleaned by a certified restorer.
- People with a medical condition or chemical sensitivities should move to a clean environment if they experience discomfort, dizziness, or nausea.
Fire Don'ts:
- Enter the structure unless it is structurally sound and ventilated. Carbon monoxide is often worse after a fire is extinguished. If you do not know, assume it is not and contact a restoration contractor.
- Remove any content affected by the smoke and fire.
- Do not eat any food exposed to smoke and soot.
- Wipe walls and painted surfaces, doing so may cause damage.
- Attempt to clean any of your contents without professional advice, many damages from fire losses occur long after the fire is out. Your valuables are best left to the professionals.
- Do not attempt to use any electrical device.
- Hesitate to call the professionals at TCI if you have any questions.
